Rwanda Trip #3 May 18th- June 3rd 2012
This is as close as I have gotten to Manhattan. I could see the Statue of Liberty.

I realized when I got to Brussels that the dipsticks at the TSA missed this even though I got the grope at LAX.

The kids are always smiling. They don't know any other way of life and are just being kids.

They are trying to stomp on the green laser from my pointer; too much fun for me.

When the laser goes off, the clowning resumes full force.

I am with our assistants in a eatery in Kibuye. Some stranger looks over to me and says, " you are welcome here. "

Our main man Jados. The wheel is a school bell. Fairly standard item on schools in Rwanda.

Good view of the half round gutters. That is a avocado tree on the right. We enjoy them daily.

I had never felt like a rock star installing gutters before coming to Africa.

I can say that the kids didn't learn much that day besides a visual on how to install rain gutters and rain harvesting tanks.

His shirt says " wash your hands to stay healthy ".

Jados and Alphonse connect the eleven hundred gallon tank to the gutters.

The first completed installation of my third trip. This was at a Catholic school.

They love having their pictures taken. Many have only seen their own image reflected in water.

They are teaching the children English. French is out of favor considering that they were allegedly involved in the atrocities.

They are always smiling when we meet them.

I confess, I was trying to get a good shot with my new logo.

We asked, " is the road passable?. "
He said, nakebazo. No problem.Rain water harvesting Southern CaliforniaRwandaAfricaWater reclamationRain water harvesting Southern California Rwandawaterharvesting
Our van loaded with gutters, ladders and the filter tank stand before getting stuck.

They call it The Land of a Thousand Hills, but I think that's an undercount.

This is what people call an adventure.
We were not stuck five minutes before locals came and started helping us. We didn't even ask, they just jumped right in the mud and helped us.Rain water harvesting Southern CaliforniaRwandaAfricaWater reclamationRain water harvesting Southern California Rwandawaterharvesting
They dug drainage ditches and pushed and pulled for two hours.
I walked up a head a mile or so. The look on the farmers faces when I came around the corner in the middle of nowhere was priceless.Rain water harvesting Southern CaliforniaRwandaAfricaWater reclamationRain water harvesting Southern California Rwandawaterharvesting
She is carrying a large load of elephant grass and looked at me as if I was lost. I greeted her in her language and she just stopped and stared completely dumbfounded. Her arms are outstretched in the universal, " what the hell? " position.

There is poor, and then there is Africa poor. The farmers that helped dig us out had no shoes.

As Clyde said, it was like a scene from an old Western movie where the indians gather on top of the hill to look down on the white interlopers.

This man built the " scaffolding " for our second location.

I think this was a Presbyterian church. I could be mistaken; frankly we don't ask what religion they are. Our locations are picked by the Rwandans. It was only 38 feet of gutter.

My team mates were slightly surprised when I jumped up on the " scaffolding " and started working. My rock climbing days served me well.

We popped in the hygiene class taught by Deborah Miller.

In my element; hanging half round gutters.

I think right about here I had had enough of the " scaffolding ". Note the Rwandan ladder on the right. Sometimes the situation gets absurd. You go for a walk.

A nice top view of the tank and foundation. I hate to think that part of the support of the scaffolding was that empty rain tank, but it sure looks that way.

The children began to gather to watch us. I pull out my laser pointer and have fun with them from the " scaffolding "

I am fairly certain those are tree limbs we worked from.

Our tool kits and supplies were a curious attraction for all the Rwandans.

Rolling hills, banana trees and tea plantations.

Prior to this tank installation these children were walking 45 minutes up and down those steep hills to fetch water. So much time and energy is spend gathering water that it is a full time job for some of the children, and those children never get to go to class.

Eager young men gather to assist us carry the supplies and equipment up the road that was too steep and washed out to pass in the bus.
